A Few Little Housewarming Gifts To Myself

Aside from the fact that my new apartment is in Los Angeles, on the other side of the world to my hometown of Canterbury, something else that makes it special is it is my first 'grown up' own place, as last year in London I was living in university halls, which really does not count. To mark this special occasion, I treated myself to a few little pieces I've wanted for a while to make my new home just that extra bit special!

First off, the flowers. Hydrangea's are one of my favourites, and I think a combination of the fact you can get three large stems (enough for a vase) for $5.99 in Trader Joe's, and the fact these beautiful blue ones were just calling my name while I was grocery shopping, I grabbed them to bring a bit of life and colour into our apartment - I can't afford fresh flowers all the time (you'd be surprised how they can add up) but they are a lovely housewarming treat and I think they might become a celebration tradition for me!

Cupcakes And Cashmere: A Guide For Defining Your Style, Reinventing Your Space and Entertaining With Ease: UK / US

I've wanted the book version of one of my favourite blogs, Cupcakes and Cashmere ever since it came out, but I've been saving buying it until I arrived in the US as I thought its little tips on budget interiors, style notes from another girl in Los Angeles and her odd recipe or two would come in super handy. Also, I love her bits on entertaining - I love throwing parties for friends! Watch this space for a little review of Emily's book soon!

I really had been counting down the days until I could get an iPhone for two reasons - Instagram and the ability to buy a Kate Spade iPhone cover. This was my first purchase in Los Angeles, at the Kate Spade store at the mall at Century City. It is super cute, and also goes a long way towards protecting your beloved phone, e.g. when someone knocks into you while you're shopping on 4th Street in Santa Monica and it drops on the pavement, your screen won't shatter - I say that is a good investment! Also, in case you were wondering my nail polish is 'Borrowed and Blue' by Essie with an embellishment in 'Shine On Crazy Diamond' by Orly.

Joy The Baker Cookbook: 100 Simple And Comforting Recipes: UK / US

Finally, another blogger book I have been waiting until I arrived in Los Angeles to buy is food and baking blogger Joy The Bakers first cookbook which, as she says on the cover, really is a celebration of butter and sugar! I really love to bake cakes, but as the ingredients are so different here in America I'm really excited to bake everything from cupcakes which I would usually be able to bake without a recipe in England, to more complex bakes that she's broken down to be super easy so I can learn new skills, with ease. Again, once I've baked a few things out of it I'm going to be reviewing this book, so I'll keep you all posted!

Is there anything special, or that you've been wanting for a while you've treated yourself to 'just because' recently?

  9. There is nothing like flowers and baking to make a house feel like a home.

I might need to have a look at both of these books.

Sounds like you are settling in :0)

  13. What a great post! We have so much in common! :) Congrats on your new apartment...I LOVE LA! I just love hydrangeas, and every home needs fresh flowers. :) I've been wanting to buy the Cupcakes & Cashmere book, and I can't believe I didn't know Joy the Baker has a book...I LOVE her blog! I too just bought a Kate Spade iphone case, but mine is polka dot. Kate Spade was the first "designer" bag I bought way back in 2001. At the time I thought $200 was sooooo much money to spend on a bag...little did I know how much I would be spending now!

  14. Those flowers are to die for! One of my goals is that I move out of where I'm currently living to move to a city with Trader Joes {it's the little things right? small towns are not quite as exciting}. Those flowers are just cementing that goal for me....thanks for sharing!

  16. Go for it! As for how it has lasted, I got it in September, and I'm only thinking of replacing it now, mainly because I've dropped it and I left it in something super sticky which took a bit of the metallic off - but 4 months is still pretty good!
