Weekly Love: Week 154

What I love about Summer is that it not only gives me the opportunity to visit places that I'd find too cold at any other time of the year (hello Iceland last Summer, Glasgow last weekend), but it also gives me a chance to really spend some time with friends that I don't really get the opportunity to during the year, either because we live in different parts of the country or because some of the group are still in education or further study. This week, take the time to touch base with the people closest to you, just to say hi, or if you can make plans.

1. Stunning views over Scotland from the plane window flying into Glasgow. | 2. The Charbonnel et Walker press office know the quickest way to my heart: a box of my favourite English Rose & Violet Creams (which are currently at 10% both box sizes!) | 3. Getting dressed up to get up close and personal with bees on a Glaswegian Sunday morning with the team from Plan Bee. More to follow as I'm working on a proper feature for one of the publications I write for. I'll be sure to link you all in! | 4. Gathering flowers from the garden for the kitchen table. | 5. Sunday morning Full English Breakfasts, lashings of toast and oodles of tea (oh, and local apple juice) on the seafront at The Royal Hotel in Deal. | 6. A Mummy/ Daughter lunch break on a Canterbury clothes shopping trip at KITCH.

7. Afternoon walks through the fields to the post box. | 8. While I was in Glasgow I had a super comfy room at the citizenM - I love their hotels while I'm traveling! (You can read my review of their hotel on Southbank in London here) | 9. A simply perfect Crayfish Roll at Gordon Street Coffee in Glasgow. | 10. Indian scrambled egg breakfast rolls and cardamom tea outside Babu Bombay Street Kitchen in Glasgow. | 11. Another Glasgow restaurant pick, pre-dinner gin cocktails at The Finnieston. | 12. Cooking up a storm for my annual Summer dinner party (you can see my photos and recipes from 2013 here and 2014 here)

Places To Eat In Canterbury: Byron + Byron Burger Club

As I mentioned in my review of The Burger Brothers' residence at Alberry's the other week, a massive source of new opening excitement in Canterbury was whipped up the moment Byron announced that they were coming to town. Now, usually I'm not one to write about chains, but I've never seen Byron as one. Maybe it was because the first Byron I ever had when there was only a handful of branches; I was eating what I will always remember as one of the first, good 'proper' hamburgers I ever had at their first ever branch outside of London at Bluewater (where my teenage self used to travel to to go to all the big shops before I moved to London!)

Places To Eat On The Isle of Man: The Boatyard, Peel

I've mentioned before when I showed you the beautiful Ballaugh Shore last year that I only seem to visit the Isle of Man for less than happy family occasions. My recent trip was not really for much lighter reasons, but given a bit more warning that I'd be visiting I decided to do a bit of research to add something into the trip that we could all enjoy together. I turned to the guys at Visit Isle of Man for a few recommendations, and ended up booking a table at a seafood restaurant called Tanroagan in Douglas, the island's capital.

Recipe: Prosciutto Wrapped Griddled Nectarine Caprese Starter

Be they family, friends or dates, as much as I love to eat out, I have a compulsive need to cook for other people. While I do love spending time in the kitchen making indulgent favourites just for me, most of the recipes I put together are with other people in mind. Last year when match.com asked me to come up with a recipe for their Aphrodisiac Cafe I came up with these Chocolate, Summer Berry & Amaretti Cheesecake Cups for two. This year, when they asked me to come up with another date-ready recipe, I decided it might be an idea to put together a date night starter, because selecting a main and a dessert are the easy bit.

Cocktail Hour: Gin & Watermelon Juice with Fresh Basil

For the part few days of my Los Angeles trip I stayed at The Line Hotel in Koreatown. I'll have a full review of my stay ready for you soon, but today I wanted to share with you the ultimate Summer drink, my take on the Watermelon Gin and Juice that the pool staff were serving up in big plastic cups while us guests lazed around on sun loungers around the terrace pool in the glorious Southern Californian sunshine.

Street Feast #dinerama Shoreditch: Yum Bun, Breddos Tacos, Busan & Why I Won't Be Visiting Street Feast Again

For our annual visit to Street Feast, Jon and I decided to try out their new Shoreditch location for this Summer - Dinerama - rather than heading to Dalston Yard (you can read my reviews of Dalston Yard Street Feast in 2013 here and 2014 here). Our plan was to eat our fill of some of our favourites and peruse the years cocktail selection before being joined by a couple of our work and old university friends. While this blog post is more of an op-ed about this years overall Street Feast experience, shall we start with the bit we loved, the food?

Recipe: Last Minute Charbonnel et Walker Hot Chocolate Fondue

This was supposed to be a blog post about hot chocolate ice cream. I have a recipe for hot chocolate ice cream, where you make up a classic hot chocolate mix on the stove and then churn it into the most incredible chocolate ice cream. I made it the other week with the hot chocolate the team at traditional English chocolatier Charbonnel et Walker sent me, with one of their milk chocolate bars chopped up to make indulgent chips. It was absolutely delicious on the first day. But when I went to shoot the ice cream again (I was not happy with the first set of pictures I took) I discovered that simply by being left in the freezer for 10 days my delicious chocolate treat had turned somewhat grainy and inedible.

Weekly Love: Week 153

I think it is safe to say that we have now hit barbecue season in earnest. For the first of my Southern California inspired 'Sunshine Suppers' over at Borough Market this Summer, I've put together an easy recipe for Barbecue Corn on the Cob with Miso, Coriander and Lime Butter that is great to throw together for the start of a grilled feast. 1. Catching up with old school friends back for the Summer festivities. I had some questions about what I was wearing on Instagram: I'm afraid my dress is an old one I picked up from Ted Baker for a garden party a couple of Summers ago, and my Jaeger wedges date back to when I was actually at school! Though, while my navy Whistles jersey blazer was a sale purchase, they now do a double buttoned version in several different colours which you can find here. | 2. Byron Burger has now opened in Canterbury! I had an absolutely delicious Summer special with a can of their house lager for lunch on opening day, which also doubled as my first experience of the Byron Burger club - full blog post to follow! | 3. Toasting Fathers Day with a bottle of Bouvet Saphir Brut from the Loire Valley the guys at Lay and Wheeler were kind enough to pop over to me. | 4. More goodies to get me through the week, Strawberry Dusted Truffles the team at Charbonnel et Walker sent over to me along with the ingredients for an upcoming recipe post - stay tuned! | 5. Escaping from the heat by reading Waitrose Kitchen in the swimming pool. | 6. Fragrant peaches and apricots for sale by the roadside.

7. The sun going down over Canterbury Cathedral Cloisters. | 8. Throwing together a last minute Eton Mess for dessert in some tall ice cream glasses (I have these ones) with local Kent strawberries, cream leftover from making strawberry ice cream and some leftover homemade meringue. | 9. The beautiful golden sunrise at 5am on Ballaugh Shore, Isle of Man. | 10. Fresh juices at Chegworth Valley at Borough Market. | 11. Lemon butter poached fish at The Griffin's Head in Chillenden. | 12. A fantastic tip for veggies on the barbecue, baby peppers are fantastic griddled whole, just brushed with a little olive oil.

Places To Eat In Canterbury: The Burger Brothers at Alberry's

There is something of a burger boom going on in Canterbury at the moment. Last week much to everyones excitement Byron opened up by the Cathedral gates, and Gourmet Burger Kitchen has started to covert a shopfront down the end of the High Street. There are also rumours that what used to be Bar Eleven if you can remember back that far is being fitted up as an indie burger joint, and that Ed's Diner is coming to town. So, I thought it was high time I finally got around to visiting The Burger Brothers residency at Alberry's, a now refurbished version of the bar I spent many an evening in with school friends as an eighteen year old.

Places To Eat In Los Angeles: Sunny Spot, Venice

Just a quick one today! While I was only having lunch alone (one of the things I love the most about taking a break is to be able to just go and sit somewhere with good food and good drinks and read the paper by myself), I really wanted to share with you a great spot on the very edge of Venice, right at the Marina Del Rey end of Abbot Kinney Boulevard that I visited one hot and sunny Monday lunchtime when I was staying in L.A.: Sunny Spot, a bar and restaurant headed up by L.A. chef Roi Choi and his team with a Jamaican slant.

Recipe: Herby Lemon & Garlic Barbecue Prawn Skewers

One of my favourite things about Summer cooking is barbecuing. Well, coming up with recipes for the barbecue, anyway. I've mentioned before I'm not the best person on the grill, but when it comes to inventing my own marinades for the grill, such as for my Whole Lemon & Honey Barbecue Chicken Skewers, or putting together ideas for things like my S'mores Barbecue Bananas, I'm completely in my kitchen happy place. While I shared a lot of chicken recipes last Summer (if we don't know what to cook for supper we usually just grab some from the freezer and marinate), today I want to share a recipe I've come up with recently that is such a quick, easy and delicious way to serve up another staple we also always have stashed in the freezer: prawns.
