Instagram Diaries: Spring Break In Los Angeles
I know I usually do a roundup of my Instagram photos from the last fortnight in my Weekly Love posts, but I’ve had the most incredible last two weeks over Spring Break I thought some of the pictures I’ve taken with my iPhone over the break warrant a post all to themselves; not only is this my last ever Easter holiday (I know I have another year of university in London left, but all I have after Easter next Spring are exams, which makes the holiday not really count), and my first ever and only American ‘Spring Break’, but the last two weeks have made me realise how incredibly lucky I am to live in a city like Los Angeles, even if I do miss London terribly at times and moan incessantly about the dreadful public transportation here.
I love discovering new favourite places, so I think one of my Spring Break highlights has to be the late afternoon spend shooting an (upcoming) outfit post at Venice’s Famous Canals, somewhere I had yet to wander over to. I instantly fell in love with the beautiful waterside idyl; can I please trade my Westside apartment for a waterside cottage here for my last three months living in Los Angeles please?
Also, hands up here who watches Californication? I’ve really enjoyed spotting some of my favourite haunts while watching Season 6 this year, as so much of it is shot around Venice. I always loved the canals when Hank and Becca went on their father/ daughter walks around them, and it kinda made me sad wandering over the bridges that my Daddy was not with me so we could go for a father/ daughter wander too.
Before shooting we grabbed a drink at one of my already favourite haunts, the TOMS Flagship on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. As well as obviously selling the shoes, the store contains a coffee shop that sells fresh pastries and freshed pressed juice from one of my LA favourites The Pressed Juicery. Nicole and I enjoyed each others company and the fact that because we are both photographers, we totally understand and endorse each others need to Instagram practically everything in sight. More importantly though, Nicole brought me a bag of real Cadbury’s Mini Eggs from her recent trip to London. They did not last long.
Now jumping back to the very beginning of my Spring Break for a moment I wanted to share some of my snaps from my first and only (I’m not a big fan of the area) trip to Downtown Los Angeles to visit Bottega Louie for lunch and some of their famous macarons. I’ll just leave you with photos of the food for now; look out for a longer post and full ‘Places To Eat In Los Angeles’ review coming soon!
While I wish I had time for my blog to be totally organic; I wake up in the morning, come up with an idea for, to give an example, a great recipe post, I then test it, remake it with any changes, shoot it, edit the photos, write it and post it that evening or have it ready to go the very next morning, real life does not work like that. Some posts are organic like that (my Basic Chicken Soup is an example when this has happened), but most I have spent quite a bit of time working on and were shot up to a month before they finally appear on the blog. As I tend to get rather busy during term time and cooking time is more about feeding myself than experimenting I’ve taken the free days with the apartment and kitchen to myself while my roommates are away for Spring break to work on some recipe posts that I will be publishing over the next few weeks. You’ve already seen the breakfast smoothies and the Green Eggs & Ham, and the popcorn and the salad dressings in Bermuda shot glasses are posts you’ll have to keep and eye out for!
I feel that Ben & Jerry’s is an essential part to Spring Break. Also, if you can’t choose between what is in my mind the best Ben & Jerry’s flavour ever made, Phish Food, and the best ice cream ever full stop, Mint Choc Chip, have both. Fun ice cream cone non negotiable. You are on holiday, after all!
There are lots of pretty awesome things I ran into on my travels over the break. All the fantastic smelling flowers are out in full force in Venice (walking down a residential block smells divine), Los Angeles’ particular brand of awesome graffiti and the Warby Parker glasses pop up shop, which drives around LA in an old school bus.
I hope everyone else had as fantastic a Spring Break/ Easter Holiday as I did, enjoy the Spring and to all my British readers, I hope the weather improves soon!
