Bloomsbury to Oxford Street
This afternoon I took a lovely wander from Bloomsbury (London) all the way to Oxford Street, enjoying the Autumn sunshine, visiting some of my old haunts and discovering some new ones.
The Russel Square Garden looked beautiful with all the crisp Autumn leaved that have started to fall. I want to head over to St James’ Park in Westminster sometime next week to hopefully take some photos – it is my favourite London park.
My real reason for being in Bloomsbury was to register at Senate House Library, the big University Of London library. The building is incredible, epically large and reminds me a lot of the sort of buildings you see in photos of Washington D.C…
As it is right next to Senate House, I decided to spend a bit of time in the British Museum as I had not visited for ages.
Classical Civilisation geek that I am, my favourite feature is the Parthenon Rooms holding all of the Ancient Greek treasures from Athens.
The best pieces are the Elgin Marbles, which are the piece of sculpture from the pediments and frieze of the Parthenon of Acropolis hill. In the Acropolis Museum in Athens there is actually an entire empty room dedicated to these pieces of sculpture complete with plinths – but somehow I don’t think the British Museum is going to be giving them back any time soon…
From the van outside the main entrance to the British Museum, this has to be the best 99 Flake I’ve ever had. So rich and creamy – sorry I forgot to photograph it before I started taking a few bites!
I am a theatre geek, and I also did not have a map in my hand (not that I would have been able to read it anyway!) so I was super suprised and super excited to find myself on the famous Drury Lane!
This is Freemasons Hall in Covent Garden. The last time I was here it looked very busy and very different – it is where Vauxhall Fashion Scout at London Fashion Week is held!
The amazing cakes in the window of Patisserie Valerie always take my breath away…
I always walk past the Crown & Anchor pub in Covent Garden and look in the windows at the punters as I head either towards The Seven Dials (shopping area) or in the other direction back to the tube station. I must stop in there for a drink someday.
Inside the Cath Kidston store in Covent Garden – shame they did not have what I was looking for!
Finally I made it onto Oxford Street where I made my way up to my favourite haunt and spiritual home of Selfridges, but not before noticing some of the beautiful architecture lining the street if you just take a moment to gaze up from street level.
What did you do this afternoon?
